Students give Winnipeg's West End a spring clean-up
5 Grade 9 classes from General Wolfe School took on the responsibility of cleaning the neighbourhood on Friday
Dozens of young people spent the day Friday outside in Winnipeg's West End, picking up trash and sweeping the sidewalks.
The annual initiative, which is run by the West End Biz,is one rooted in community pride, according to General Wolfe School's Terry Silva, who was supervising the youth.
"The kids are very, very motivated," Silva said.
"The kids live in this area and they want to make sure that the area's nice and clean because they work and play and this is where the parents live, so they are very proud of this community."
Alliyah Joaquin is a studentof one of five Grade 9 classes from the school tasked with tidying up the neighbourhood.
"If you go to General Wolfe and you see your community very clean, it's like, you're really proud to say that, 'Oh, I go to this school,I live here' and stuff," she said.
Joaquinsaid the job doesn't even feel like work to her.
"Well, there's nothing really hard because you're surrounded with people you really like and it's good people doing good things," she said.
The annual cleanup has been happening in the West Endfor 24 years, Silva added.
