Gimli unveils fresh-faced Viking statue

After a few weeks hidden under an orange tarp, Gimli's Viking is breathing fresh air once again.

Alberta's Dinosaur Valley Studios was in charge of getting the Viking back in tip-top shape

The statue, built in 1967, was constructed by George Barone, a former CBC set designer, who was also responsible for the White Horse Plain statue and Boissevain's turtle. (Submitted)
Gimli tore away the tarps hiding their IcelandicViking from the public eye on Friday and is he ever looking good.

After 48 years of standing guard, it was time for the dirt and the grime to get stripped away from the fibreglassstatue.

"It's exactly as it looked in 1967," saidGlenn Eliasson, son of the statue's designer. Eliasson was worried when the renovations began but approves of how the renewal turned out.
