Grant Nordman, former Winnipeg councillor, seeks Tory nod in Assiniboia

Former Winnipeg city councillor Grant Nordman is hoping to enter provincial politics as a Progressive Conservative MLA in Assiniboia.

Nordman's campaign announced on Friday that he will seek the Tory nomination in the west Winnipeg constituency in the hopes of running under the Tory banner in the 2016 provincial election.

Assiniboia is currently represented by NDP MLA Jim Rondeau, who announced last week that he won't be seeking re-election.

Nordman's father, Ric Nordman, was a PC MLA for the Assiniboia constituency from 1981 to 1988.

Grant Nordman had represented the St. Charles ward on Winnipeg city council from 2006 until last year, when he was was unseated by newcomer Shawn Dobson in October's civic election.

In addition to being a fiscal conservative, Nordman's campaignalso touted his commitment to the environment through his battery recycling program, BatBox Pickup, which has collected almost 1,600 kilograms of dead batteries in the St. Charles and Assiniboia areas to date.
