Manitoba election: Green Party would stop funding education with property taxes

The Green Party of Manitoba promises to eliminate the education property tax and instead use personal and corporate tax revenues to fund education,if elected on April 19.

"The current system for funding education creates severe inequities, both for students and for property tax payers," Green Leader James Beddome said in a newsrelease.

"The end result is an inequitable tax system and one in which some school divisions are underfunded and students are shortchanged."

The party's proposal aims to provide more equal funding for divisions across the province, Beddome said.

"Lower income homeowners living in modestly priced homes may see an increase in costs,but our proposed guaranteed annual income will more than offset those tax increases," he said.

Small business wouldn't see a change in taxes but large corporations would take a bigger hit, the release said.
