Highway crash injures 1 north of Winnipeg

A crash on Highway 9 north of Winnipeg sent one person to hospital early Saturday.

A crash on Highway 9 north of Winnipeghas sentone person to hospital with serious injuries, RCMP say.

According to police, a 17-year-old man from the Selkirk area was transported to hospital in critical condition early Saturday morning.

Police said the teen was in a Honda Civic that collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV around 1 a.m. CT Saturday, on a curve near the intersection of Minnehaha Avenue and Main Street also called Highway 9 in the rural community of West St. Paul,just north ofWinnipeg.

The West St. Paul fire department,the St. Paul EMS and RCMP from Selkirk rural detachment responded to the scene. Witnesses said rescue crews were faced with a complicated extrication torescue the Civic's driver, who was the only person in the vehicle.

The driver and lone occupant of the SUV, a 61-year-old man from the rural municipality of St. Andrews, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Police said theHonda was southbound on the highway and the SUV was northbound at the time of the crash.

They added that alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash and the road conditions were noted as "fair."
