The woman was foundoutside in the 200 block of Spence Street shortly after 10 p.m., suffering fromlife-threatening injuries, police said.

She was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead.

"I never thought this would have ever happened," Michelle Camus, who lives several houses away from the scene, said Monday.

Police swarmed the area with general patrol officers, members from the heavily-armed tactical team, and canine units but there have been no arrests.

"We're still trying to move forward in this investigation," saidConst.Rob Carver.

The Winnipeg Police Service's identification unit is gathering evidence on Spence Street. (CBC)

He did not know where the woman was found, whether in a yard or boulevard, or street. Carver wouldn't say if the woman was known to them or if there were multiple gunshots.

He said police were called by residents about the sound of a gun and officers responded quickly.

On Monday, a section of the street remained blocked off by police tape and the identification unit was on scene. Carver expects that to be cleared soon as most evidence from the scene has been gathered.

Camus said she has lived in the West Broadway area since August and felt safe enough to walk regularly down Spence Street to buy groceries and cigarettes at a corner store.

"Sometimes you have the odd person walking up here drunk and intoxicated or people yelling down a backlane nothing where anyone has been shot," she said.

"I haven't even seen people fighting on this street. I thought it was fine to move here."

But in light of Sunday's shooting, Camus said she's having second thoughts about the neighbourhood.

"I kind of want to move. I'm shaking," she said. "I'm scared I don't even know what to say, this is insane."
