Ice cutters start working on Red River north of Selkirk

The Manitoba government is starting its annualflood fight today by sending out ice-cutting machines to work on the Red River north of Selkirk.

The cutters, along with the province's Amphibex ice-breaking machines, will reduce flooding caused by ice jams on the river.

The ice cutters will be cutting and scoring ice on the Red River between Netley Creek and Netley Lake starting Monday, the government said in a news release.

People who are snowmobiling, hiking or ice fishing are advised to stay off the ice in areas where warning signs are posted or where there's evidence of recent ice cutting.
