Inquest called into inmate's death at Dauphin Correctional Centre

Manitoba's medical examiner has called for an inquest into the death ofan inmate atthe Dauphin Correctional Centre.

Freeman Zong, 26, was found hanging in a shower area of the correctional centre on July 14, 2016.

Zong was cut down by guards who performed CPR and called for an ambulance, a news release from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said on Monday.

He was pronounced dead at the minimum-security jail and an autopsy ruled Zong's death a suicide.

John Younes, Manitoba's acting chief medical examiner, called an inquest into the death in accordance with The Fatality Inquiries Act, which states that under some circumstances it is mandatory if the death is in custody.

The inquest will look at all of the circumstances around Zong's suicide and whether anything can be done to prevent similar deaths from happening in the future.

A date for the inquest hasn't been decided yet.

At the time of Zong's death, the century-old Dauphin Correctional Centre held 51 men and one woman and it had a capacity of 61 inmates.
