Winnipeg police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection to a brazen early-morning shooting last Saturday.

Winnipeg police Const. Rob Carver said the shooting, which happened around 6:30 a.m. on the busy street near the city's downtown, was serious.

"He could have died."

The victim has since been upgraded to stable condition.

Carver said itappears there was a "gang overlay" to the shooting, though the two may not have known each other.

String of shootings

There have been a number of shootings in Winnipeg recently. Four people were injured last weekend in three separate shootings in Winnipeg's North End and Centennial neighbourhoods, with the Isabel Street attack being one of them.

A 36-year-old man was also shot on June 25 in the city's West End in an alley between Sherbrook and Maryland.

Carver said Winnipegpolice typically see more gang violence in the summer.

"Every shooting that I'm aware of certainly in the last few months and maybe going back farther is either related to gangs or related to the drug culture this city," Carver said.

The suspect in the Isabel shooting has been charged with armed robbery with a firearm, discharge firearm with intent, carry concealed weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, point firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon and failure to comply with a probation order.
