Trudeau to attend Canada Summer Games opening Friday

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be among the thousands of people descending on Winnipeg for the opening of the Canada Summer Games on Friday.

The prime ministerwill start the day in Kenora, Ont., which will host the rowing competitions starting Monday.

Later that day, Trudeau will take a boat tour of Lake of the Woods before attending a community barbecue.

He'll meet at Winnipeg City Hall with Mayor Brian Bowman about 4 p.m. Friday.

That evening, he and federal Minister of Sport Carla Qualtroughwill take part in the Canada Games opening ceremony at Bell MTS Place. The ceremonies start at 7 p.m.

The ceremonies will include musical performances by:

  • Ontario singer/songwriterSerena Ryder.
  • Coeur de Pirate, the Quebec singer/songwriter also known Batrice Martins.
  • The Bros. Landreth, a Winnipegalternative country and folk music group that will be performing with a youth chorus from StudioWorks and young dancers n a special collaborationwith the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Hundreds of athletes began arriving in Winnipeg on Thursday morning, withcompetitorsfrom Ontario and Alberta leading the way. By the end of the day, about 2,000 athletes, coaches and mission staff will have arrived from all over Canada.

Competition starts Saturday and continues until Aug. 13.
