Kirby Tott, Canadian reservist, dies while training at Manitoba base

A Canadian soldier in the reserves has died while training at a military base in Manitoba.

A Canadian soldier in the reserves has died while training at a military base in Manitoba.

The military saidPte. Kirby Tott, 25, died suddenly Saturday afternoon at Canadian Forces Base Shilo.

"Pte. Kirby collapsed whileconducting training. There were no vehicles or weapons involved,"Lori Truscott, a spokesperson withCFB Shilo, stated in an email to CBC News on Monday.

"Until the autopsy is complete we cannot comment on the possible cause of his death.Because both the autopsy and investigation are ongoing we won't have anything further to provide today."

Tott was a member of the Rocky Mountain Rangers, a Reserve Regiment of 39 Canadian Brigade Group, and was carrying out specialty training required to become an Infantry soldier, according to a news releaseissued on Sunday.

ItsaidTott joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a reservist with the Rocky Mountain Rangers in Prince George, B.C., in 2012.

Lt.-Gen. Marquis Hainse, commander of the Canadian Army, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper both issued statements offering condolences to Tott's family.

"This tragic news reminds us of the dangers that the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces must face, whether Reservists, Regular Force, participating in training or deployed on operations abroad," Hainse said in his statement.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark released a statement Monday commending Tott for his service.

"As the flag flies half-mast at the correctional centre today, we grieve the loss of a devoted officer who was taken from us too soon," thestatement reads. "He represented Canada and British Columbia at our very best.
