Lawyer pleads guilty to illegally employing nanny

A Winnipeg immigration lawyer has pleaded guilty to illegally employing an immigrant.

A Winnipeg immigration lawyer has pleaded guilty to illegally employing an immigrant.

David Davis entered the plea in provincial court Friday morning and was sentenced by Judge John Guy to a conditional discharge.

The sentence means Davis won't have a criminal record so long as he stays out of legal trouble for a year.

He was charged in 2007 by the Canada Border Services Agency for employing a Filipino woman as a nanny. However, the woman wasn't legally allowed to work in Canada.

Guy could have fined Davis or sent him to prison but he noted the lawyer had already been punished by the law society and embarrassed publicly.

The law society fined Davis $25,000 and suspended him for six months.

Davis is now back at work.
