Indigenous advocate Lisa Meeches comes home to Winnipeg after stroke in Alberta

Indigenous activist and filmmaker Lisa Meeches has returned to Winnipeg after spending days in recovery in an Alberta hospital following a stroke she suffered late last week.

Her publicist Angie Lamirande, who spoke on behalf of family, toldCBC News Saturday that Meeches was on her way homeSaturday, which also happened to be her birthday.

Meeches is theexecutive director of theManitoAhbeeFestival and sitson the Aboriginal Peoples' Advisory Committee for the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. She spent about a week in hospital in Calgary following her stroke.

Members of Meechesfamily made a post to her Facebook page Saturday afternoon saying they are thankful for "all the love and energy everyone is sending."

"Mom is moving along so quickly in her recovery because of the spiritual love and support she is getting and because she is so strong! We see that strength coming out through her healing," the post reads.

"Please continue to send your love and prayers while also continuing to respect our privacy and that of our mom as she moves forward."
