Man dies after being found unresponsive at Addictions Foundation of Manitoba facility

The death of a manat Winnipeg'sRiver Point Centre, aresidential treatment facility for men battling addiction,is currently under review by the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM).

This fall, a client was found unresponsive at the facility on Magnus Avenue and was rushed to hospital where he later died, an AFM spokesperson told CBC News by email.

"The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba has met with the client's family and our condolences remain with them during this difficult time," thespokesperson said. "We also acknowledge the impact it has had on staff who work with people who have very complex and high-risk addictions."

The cause of the man's death has not been released but the foundation is looking into the matter.

"We are reviewing all the relevant details related to this incident to learn from it and ensure that we continue to be diligent in supporting clients receiving care at AFM facilities," the spokesperson said.

"These type of incidents are extremely rare, but we want to review any processes that can be put in place to prevent them in the future."

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirms an investigation into theman's death is complete but a decision to hold an inquest has not been made.

There has been one other death at an AFM residential facility in the past 10 years, according to the organization. The first death was related to a pre-existing medical condition.
