Const. Robert Carver said the fire truck's lights and sirens were on at the time the man was struck. The manwas rushed to hospital but later pronounced dead.

Moments prior to the collision,a car in front of the fire truck pulled over to let the emergency vehicle pass, Carver said.

"When it pulled over, the fire truck proceeded to pass it. There was an object in the roadway. It struck the object. It turned out the object was in fact a male lying in the roadway," he told reporters.

The firefighter driving the truck slammed on the brakes but was unable to stop, Carver said.

"We really have two victims here because the driver of this fire truck is going to have to deal with the trauma of having struck someone nothing he could have done, obviously," he said.
