Manitoba elk deaths under investigation

Conservation officials in Manitoba are investigating the recent discovery of about a dozen elk carcasses near Duck Mountain.

Conservation officials in Manitoba are investigating the recent discovery of about a dozen elk carcasses near Duck Mountain.

A 45-second video showing the carcasses has attracted attention since it was posted on YouTube on Monday. It had been viewed nearly 9,600 times as of Wednesday night.

Officials with Manitoba Conservation say such a large elk kill would be unusual.

Elk hunting is licensed in Manitoba, and officials are trying to determine if the animals were hunted illegally.

First Nation hunters are not subject to limits, but they are not allowed to waste or sell the animals they harvest.

Some experts worry the province does not have a policy on hunting elk, which could eventually put the elk population at risk.
