NDP pledges $125M to build, renovate Manitoba recreational facilities

Manitoba's New Democrats say they'll spend $125 million over five years on arenas, swimming pools, parks, libraries and other recreational facilities across the province if they're re-elected.

The party made the campaign promise on Monday, pledging to help renovate and build recreational facilities "that give Manitobans even more recreation and healthy living opportunities" closer to home.

"We know that in neighbourhoods and in communities all across Manitoba, they have the same needs," James Allum, the NDPcandidate for Fort Garry-Riverview, told reporters in Winnipeg.

"So the idea here is to tell Manitobans today, in this election, that we're going to be with them every step ofthe way in making sure that their communities are strong, safe and sustainable with recreational activities so that everyone counts and everyone matters."

Allum said if re-elected, the NDP would spend at least $10 million on "more recreation opportunities" in northern Manitoba. As well, he said his party remains committed to building a performing arts centre in Steinbach, Man.

As well, he said the party would work with the City of Winnipeg on a number of projects, including work on St. John's and Cornish libraries, the redevelopment of the Fort Garry Community Centre, and work on a new Maples Multiplex and a Concordia Wellness Centre.

Allum pledged more outdoor soccer pitches in partnership with the Winnipeg Soccer Federation, including a new field at Red River College's Notre Dame campus and two at Kilcona Park. He said existing workon the St. James Civic Centre and the Dakota Collegiate field would also be completed.

Earlier on Monday, NDP Leader Greg Selinger said he would turn student loans into non-repayable grants if hisparty is re-elected on April 19.
