Manitoba's Ukrainian community is cheering MP MaryAnn Mihychuk's new ministerial appointment.

Mihychuk was appointed Canada's Minister of Employment on Wednesday with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed his cabinet.

At her swearing in ceremony, Mihychuk said "thank you" in Ukrainian.

Her Kildonan-St. Paul riding has a high number of people of Ukrainian descent.

"It speaks volumes," said Oksana Bondarchuk of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Manitoba Provincial Council. "I think she's going to be a good minister. I think she's not going to be a pushover. I think she's earned it, and she will retain it."

Bondarchuk said Mihychuk has always been supportive of the Ukrainian community in Manitoba, and she ran a long campaign.

"I followed Poll Tracker every day. She was always running third, but I was also aware that from the day after her nomination, she was door-knocking," she said.
