What to know about the Dawson Trail riding for Manitoba's 2023 election

The Dawson Trail riding in southeastern Manitoba was created in 2008 from pieces of other ridings in the area west of Winnipeg, including much of the rural area that had been part of the Steinbach riding.

The Dawson Trail riding in southeastern Manitoba was created in 2008 from pieces of other ridings in the area east of Winnipeg, including much of the rural area that had been part of the Steinbach riding.

The riding is bounded to the southeast by the rural municipality of La Broquerie and to the southwest by the rural municipality of Hanover. Its northernmost point is just north of Sapton, and its westernmost point is just west of Prairie Grove. Its eastern boundary is just east of Nourse.

The riding includes the communities of Ste. Anne, Lorette, Landmark,Giroux, Hazelridge, Anola and Sapton. It no longer includes St. Adolphe or Ile des Chnes, which are now part of Springfield-Ritchot.

Dawson Trail's population is 25,200, says the province's riding profile (compiled from the 2021 census). Its population has grown since the 2016 census, when it was listed as 23,230.

The median age of the riding is close to the provincial median, at 37.2 in Dawson Trail compared to 38.4 provincewide, the riding profile and the 2021 census say. The census found the median household income in the area is $97,000.

  • Roughly 97 per cent of residents said they're not visible minorities in the 2021 census, says the riding's profile compiled by the province.
  • Just over 18 per cent of residents identified as Indigenous in the 2021 census, the profile says, which is up around two per cent from the previous census.
  • The two largest employment groups are construction (15.6 per cent) and health care and social assistance (just over 11.3 per cent). They're followed by retail trade (8.2 per cent) and educational services (8.5 per cent).

The riding was created for the Manitoba election in 2011.

As of Sept. 11, the nominated candidates for the 2023 election are:

  • Chris Wiebe (NDP).
  • Bob Lagass (Progressive Conservative incumbent).
  • Marcel Broesky (Green Party).
