Manitobans still most generous in the country giving to charity

Manitobans lead the country for donations to charity, according to a new report published by the Fraser Institute on Thursday.

In Manitoba, 25.3 per cent of adults who filled out their tax forms in 2013gave some amount of money to charity.

New Brunswick had the lowest percentage of donors, with just 20 per cent reporting charitable giving.

Compared to the United States, Canadians appear to be less giving to charities. In the United States, 25 per cent of tax-filers donate to charity whereas in Canada the national average is lowerat 21.8 per cent.

The general trendshows fewer Canadians are donating to charity than in years past, said the Fraser Institute, and Canadians are donating alower percentage of their income.

27.9 per cent of Manitobans in 2003 reported charitable giving on their tax returns, in 2008 that percentage dropped to 26.7 per cent.

From 2003 to 2013, the portion of income Manitobans donated to charity dropped nearly 20 per cent.
