A man is dead following a house fire in Winnipeg's Maples neighbourhood Saturday morning.

Firefighters and emergency crews arrived at the home at 46Martell Cres. shortly before 10:30 a.m.

When crews arrived, flames were coming out of the basement windows of the single-family, bi-level home, said Ihor Holowczynsky, assistant chief of fire rescue operations with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

"The first arriving crews were faced with a well-involved fire," said Holowczynsky, who added crews arrived within roughlyfour minutes of getting a call about a person trapped inside a burning house.

"It's an exceptional time and they made quick entry for fire attack and rescue, and came upon the victim quite soon into the event."

The man was pulled from the burning home, but was pronounced dead at the scene, said Holowczynsky. The remains of a dog were also found in the home.

"We offer our condolences to the family of the deceased individual," said the assistant chief.

"It's a tragedy, and particularly at this time of year, the Christmas season."

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the WFPS says no damage estimates are available at this time.
