Meet Me at the Bell Tower wins Manitoba human rights award

The North End anti-violence groupMeet Me at the Bell Towerand women's rights activist Christie McLeod were named winners of ManitobaHuman Rights Awards on Tuesday.

Award recipients are chosen by theManitoba Association for Rights and Liberties, the Canadian Human Rights Commissionand the Manitoba Human Rights Commission.

Meet Me at the Bell Tower (MM@BT) was honoured with the Annual Human Rights Commitment Award of Manitoba in honour of the Truth and Reconciliation Report, said a news release.

"This group has been meeting weekly at the corner of Selkirk and Powers for the past four years to create a voluntary alternative to violence and provide examples and opportunities to participate in building a stronger community," the release stated.

Christie McLeod, founder and managing director of the Human Rights Hub, is 2015's recipient of the Sybil Shack Human Rights Youth Award for, among other things, her work fighting sex trafficking and defending women's rights.

The public is invited to attend the award reception on Dec. 9 at the Union Centre, 206-275 Broadway St., from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
