Another high-profile candidate may enter the race to become Winnipeg's next mayor. MaryAnn Mihychuk has resigned from her job as the province's intergovernmental affairs and trade minister.

It has been widely speculated that Mihychuk is considering running for mayor, but a couple of weeks ago, she announced she was not interested.

Since then, she says, people have been pushing her to run.

"Since that time, the support has been overwhelming, and ultimately, I felt like I needed to take a break, really give it my full concentration and think about whether this was a path I was ready to take now," she says, adding that she will make a final decision by the end of the week.

Mihychuk was first elected to the legislature in 1995 as the MLA for St. James. She was elected in the newly formed constituency of Minto in 1999 and re-elected in 2003.

Rosann Wowchuk, deputy premier and minister of agriculture, food and rural initiatives, will serve as acting minister of intergovernmental affairs and trade, effective immediately.
