Winnipeg missing person reports skyrocketed 29% in 2015: report

More people were reported missing in Winnipeg last year than ever before, police say.

In a quarterly report released by the city Friday, police saidan "all-time high"of 8,894people were reported missing in Winnipeg in 2015 a jump of 29 per cent from 2014.

The figures will be tabled at a Winnipeg police board meeting as part of the Indigenous Women Safety and Protection report.

The majority of cases in the final quarter of 2015 involved women and girls (66 per cent), with 85 per cent of all cases involving people living under the care ofManitoba Child and Family Services.

A small minority of people accounted for a significant number of the missing personcases in the fourth quarter.

Twenty-four peoplewith 15 or more missing person reports eachmade up 20 per cent of all cases a whopping one-fifth of all missing person reports last year, police said.

Group homes and Child and Family Servicesfacilities also ranked high on the list. Sixty-nine per cent of cases involved people living in group homes, and the top 37 addresses associated with missing individuals belonged to CFS, police said.
