Missing woman's ex charged

The former boyfriend of a woman who's been missing for months has been charged with violating a court protection order she had against him.

Anthony Martin went to Mildred Flett's home on June 23, police allege

The former boyfriend of a woman who's been missing for months has been charged with violating a court protection order she had against him.

The alleged offence took place about two weeks after she was last seen.

The family of Mildred Flett, 51, said she went missing June 8 and has not been heard from since.

Earlier this week, police said they were looking to speak to Anthony Joseph Martin on the belief he may know something about where she is.

They also said the 46-year-old was wanted an unrelated warrant.

Martin was located and arrested Wednesday, police previously said.

Court records show that he is being held in custody for violating a protection order Flett took out against him in February. In her application, she alleged he had behaved violently towards her and she was afraid for her safety.

Court documents said on June 23, Martin allegedly went to Flett's home and violated the order, which bars him from coming within 200 metres of where she lives, works or carries on business.

Woman not home

A police spokesman said Thursday that Martin allegedly went to the home but Flett wasn't there.

Court records show an arrest warrant on the charge was issued in mid-July.

Martin's next court appearance is Friday morning. He has not yet made an application for bail.

Police continue their investigation into Flett's disappearance and said they've been following every lead since she was reported missing to them.

On Wednesday, a friend of Flett's said she's still hoping Flett will appear.

"[I'm] just hoping she would walk in all of a sudden sometimes you know?," Jane Hebert said.

However, it's difficult to not fear the worst, Hebert suggested.

"She might be somewhere in a ditch," she said.

Reward offered

Flett's ex-husband is Roseau River First Nation Chief Terry Nelson. He told CBC News that it was difficult to get police to pay attention to the case at first.

"I eventually had to hone my contacts and that's when it started to become a little bit more responded to," Nelson said, adding his daughters have been out scouring parts of rural Manitoba looking for her.

A cash reward of at least $4,000 is being offered by Nelson's family for information leading to Flett being located.

Flett is described as aboriginal, five-feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. She has medium-length wavy black hair and brown eyes.

Police said they have received information suggesting Flett may have cut her hair short. She also may be using the name Mildred Nelson.

Anyone with information about her disappearance is asked to call the missing persons unit at 204-986-6250.
