MTS is expanding cellphone service to Piney, Man.

MTS officials made the announcement on Tuesday, alongside MP Ted Falk, MLA Dennis Smook and Reeve Wayne Anderson.

Anderson said the community was "grateful" for MTS providing the service.

He said emergencies that happen along Highway 12 can leave drivers stuck without help.

"There is quite a long stretch about 75 kilometres we have to look after, and there is no 911 service. If anyone is in trouble, you have to go to the nearest house or drive to the nearest town to make a call," said Anderson.

Anderson said the lack of people in the area was a barrier to getting the cell service previously.

"The cost of installing it versus the number of customers didn't make business sense," he said.

Between 1,700 and 2,200 people live in the municipality, according to Anderson. The number fluctuates as cottagers come and go during different seasons.

Officials estimate service will be available in 2016.

Piney is about 150 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg.
