Ontario Provincial Police shut down Minaki detachment

The Minaki detachment of theOntario Provincial Police is being closed down.

The OPP said the decision was made "following a detachment strategic review".The detachment will close June 23 and the lease on the building is set to expire on June 30.

The community, near the Ontario-Manitoba border, is mainly populated by tourists and cottagers. The largest group of cottagers are fromWinnipeg, about a 3-hourdrive away.

"The OPP would like to reassure community members that the local area will continue to receive policing from the host OPP detachment in Kenora, with no change in detachment boundaries or service," stated a news release.

Modern technology has turnedOPP cruisers into mobile offices, anyway,enablingofficers to be moreactively engaged in the community, the release stated.

"The OPP is confident that service for the citizens of the Minaki area will not be adversely affected by this closure."
