A 70-year-old woman has been arrested for careless driving causing death in connection with a crash that killed a pedestrian last year in Winnipeg.

The crash happened just after noon on Aug.15, 2016, on Jefferson Avenue at Watson Street. Sharon Strong, 58, waswalking in a parking lot when she was hit bya ToyotaCamry, police said.

The driverwas reversing the car "at perhaps at a speed faster than she should have been and couldn't see this particular female," police spokespersonConst. TammySkrabeksaid.

Strong was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where shelater died.

The 70-year-old driver was arrested on Monday and laterreleased from custody ona promise to appear in court.

Skrabek said it's not uncommon for arrests to take a long time in situations like this.

"The traffic collision experts will have to take measurements at the scene try to determine what happened prior to [the crash],how fast the driver was going, analyze witness statements and any evidence that they have and then determine whether or not charges would actually be laid," she said.

"Often, that involves consultation with the Crown attorney's office, and often that takes several months to get done."
