IIU probes complaints that police hurt 2 people during arrests

Allegations that Winnipeg police officers injured two people during two separate arrests are beinglooked into by theIndependent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba.

During the first incident, which occurred Feb. 7, 2016, the victim claims his arm was hurt while he was being handcuffed. After being released from custody, he went to hospital and was told his arm was sprained or dislocated, according to a news release from the IIU.

He has been off work since the injury.

The second incident took place Oct.4, 2016, when a personwas being arrested for uttering threats. The victim filed a complaint Oct.17, claiming his hand was injured and required surgery.

The IIU, whichbecame operational on June 19, 2015, investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
