Police chase leads Winnipeg man, 43, into custody

A Winnipeg man is in custody following a police chase and collision with a marked cruiser that ended in him being charged with a number of offences.

A Winnipeg man is in custody following a police chase and collision with a marked cruiserthat ended inhim being charged with a number of offences.

The man, 43, has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident,dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm andtwo counts of assaulting a peace officer,among other offences.

It started when officers were on patrol on Home Street around 11 p.m. on January 1.They saw a running vehicle with two people in it: The man, who was driving, and a woman, 40, in the passenger seat.

Upon seeing the police, the man allegedly sped away.

The Winnipeg Police Service reports using a spike belt while trying to stop the vehicle, and flying in AIR1, a helicopter, to track where it was headed.

The vehicle went north down Quelch Street between Alexander and Logan Avenues and "purposely collided with a marked cruiser and then drove off," according to police.

The WPS was eventually able to stop the vehicle in the 1800 block of Burrows Avenue. Officerstook the driver and passenger into custody, but the passenger was released without any charges.
