Man shot by police after high-speed chase listed in stable condition

The condition of a man shot by Winnipeg police after a high-speed chase Monday morning is improving.

The condition of a man shot by Winnipeg police after a high-speed chase Monday morning is improving.

The 26-year-old was rushed to hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. He is now listed as stable, police said on Tuesday.

He was shot after leading police on a chase in the St. Boniface neighbourhood around 11 a.m. Monday. The chase came to a crashing halt when the car he was driving slammed into a truck in the parking lot of an industrial business on Archibald Street.

A man who works across the street from the crashtold CBCthe car was immediately pinned in by police vehicles but the driver climbed out,jumped across one of the police cars and ran down the street.

"Maybe 30 seconds later, we heard a whole bunch of gun shots. I couldn't see anything because it was further [away],"Dwayne McCauley said.

"What police had said to us is that he fired at them and they returned fire."

The26-year-old man from the car isfacing several charges, as is awoman who was in the vehicle with him at the time.

Police spokesman Const. Rob Carver said officers were called about a man with a gun on LaVerendryeStreet. When police responded, a car at the scene sped away. Police chased it for a few blocks until it crashed.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is now handling the caseand looking for information from witnesses.
