Winnipeg police are looking for a male suspect after a security guard from a downtown shopping mall was stabbed on Tuesday night.

Police say they were called to Portage Place Shopping Centre at around 10:35 p.m. CT, not long after the Winnipeg Jets game had wrapped up at the nearby MTS Centre.

The 24-year-old security guard encountered a young man who was loitering near the bus shack outside the mall on Portage Avenue and asked him to leave.

The guard was then assaulted and stabbed in the upper body with a knife, according to police.

The security guard was taken to hospital, where is reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect is described as 16 to 18 years old and five feet five inches in height. He was wearing dark blue jeans and black shoes, according to police.

Anyone with information about the Portage Place stabbing is asked to call police at 204-986-6668 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
