Red River College says it is increasing security at its Exchange District campus after one of its faculty members was viciously attacked Tuesday evening near city hall.

Police says a42-year-old man was rushed to hospital Tuesday night in a random attack.

Thecall came in around 9:20 p.m. after a passerby saw a man being attacked on the sidewalk near the former Public Safety Building at King Street and William Avenue.

Const. Tammy Skrabek said the man had serious upper-body injuries and was bleeding profusely.

Police say the attacker didn't say anything to the college instructor, who didn't knowhim.

The instructor tried to flag down drivers passing by while he was being attacked, but no one stopped to help, police said. Eventually, he got the attention of a medical professional who was passing by and provided immediate medical assistance.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition, but has since been stabilized.

No arrests have been made.

Red River College officials saythey are extending the hours of security until 11 p.m. at the ACE Project Space on McDermot after the "extremely upsetting incident."

They are also adding a dedicated mobile street patrol unit from 4 p.m. to midnight daily for their facilities in the Exchange District, in addition to the 24/7 coverage provided at the Roblin Centre and PGI, said an email from Paul Vogt, president and CEO of the college.
