The RCMP is beefing up its own security at Remembrance Day ceremonies across Manitoba today, in light of recent attacks in Ottawa and Quebec that targeted soldiers.

It's normally optional for Mounties to have their service pistols with them when they're in their ceremonial uniform, said Tara Seel, a spokesperson for the RCMP in Manitoba.

However, on Tuesday it will be mandatory for officers to carry their pistols. Seel said the measure is "just for increased security."

"They are identifiable through their uniforms as police officers, so in light of what's happened, it's important that they're able to protect themselves," she said.

Seel could not go into detail about other security measures the RCMP is putting into place for Remembrance Day, citing safety reasons.

Winnipeg police say they will also have officers present at most Remembrance Day ceremonies across the city.
