Manitoba extends rent-increase freeze another month

Manitoba is extending its freeze on rent increases for another month.

The freeze was put in place on March 24 to help people struggling to pay rent because of the pandemic.

It was slated to expire on Monday. It is now in place until the end of June.

The province has also extended the suspension of non-urgent eviction hearings until the end of June.

"Eviction orders will only be issued to address issues affecting health and safety including unlawful activities," Finance Minister Scott Fielding said in a press release.

The province is also givingsmall and medium-sized businesses three more months to file provincial income taxes.

Businesses with monthly remittances of no more than $10,000 will have more time to pay retail sales taxes and the provincial payroll tax.
