Ribbons honouring MMIW to be strung along 6th Winnipeg bridge

The organizer of Winnipeg's Red Cloth Ribbons Memorial campaign says the movement is growing.

AltheaGuiboche, otherwise known as the Bannock Lady, said people who want to remember and honour missing and murdered indigenous women plan to tie ribbons along the Midtown Bridge on Monday night.

It will be the sixth bridge in Winnipeg to be marked since the campaign started a few weeks ago.

"It's just to bring [people] together all in one spot, all those ribbons. It really had a profound effect on me," Guiboche said. "It made me tear up and actually think about these individuals."

Guibochesaid it isn't necessary to goto the event to support the campaign.

"If they can't be there, then they're welcome to tie a cloth wherever they are," she said. "It could be on their own home or somewhere in their community. They don't have to come to this particular event."

Guiboche said a group of people living in the south end of Winnipeg want to mark one of their bridges as well. A ribbon hanging event is also being planned in Ottawa.

The group is looking for donations of red broadcloth to make more ribbons.

The Monday nightgathering starts at 5 p.m. outside Chateau 500 on Donald Street.
