RCMP arrest 16-year-old after threats made against schools in Selkirk, Winnipeg

Police are holding a young man in custody in connection with threats made against students at schools in Selkirk and Winnipeg through social media on Sunday.

Police have a young man in custody in connection with threats made against students at schools in Selkirk and Winnipeg through social media on Sunday.

RCMPspokespersonSgt. PaulManaigresaid a 16-year-old boy, who is known to police, wasfound Sunday evening and police are not looking for any other suspects.

The threats were made against Kildonan-East Collegiate in Winnipeg and theLordSelkirkRegionalComprehensive Secondary School inSelkirk.

A threat was made on Snapchat around 5:15 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Parent Chris Downey called policeafter his 17-year-old daughter, who attends school in Selkirk, showed him a screen grab of the post, which said:"I guess I'm going back to jail tomorrow I'm going to kill someone "

A second post, sent out shortly after that one,said: "Don't know how much people I am going to kill tomorrow."

Downey said the person who posted the threat is a student at Lord Selkirk RegionalComprehensive Secondary School.

Parents of students at the school were alerted about the threat through anautomated call from the Lord Selkirk School Divisionjust before 8 p.m.

Many of them, including Downey, then took to Facebook to spread the news.

Lord Selkirk School Division superintendent Michele Polinuk wouldn't confirm the threat was made bya student in the division.

Counsellors will be available tostudents on Monday, but thedivision won't close any schools for the day, she said.

The Winnipeg Police Service released a statement Sunday night that said theincident is being actively investigated andin its early stages, so no further information would be released.
