Semi crashes with van, killing dozens of hogs near Morris, Man.

The driver of a minivan could face drunk driving charges after her vehicle and a semi-trailer truck collided, killing dozens of hogs that were being transported by the truck.

RCMP were called to a stretch of Highway 23, about 10 kilometreseast of Morris, at about 3:45 p.m. CT after reports of a crash.

The collision happened when a westbound semi-trailer truck tried to pass a van that was in the process of turning south onto Municipal Road 10 East, said RCMP Sgt. Paul Manaigre. Thetruck tipped on its side in the south ditch of Highway 23.

"Several dozen hogs had escaped the trailer and were found roaming around the ditch upon arrival," Manaigresaid.

"They were rounded up and placed on another truck and hauled away."

At least 40 of the pigs were killed in the crash, Manaigresaid.

The 60-year-old driver of the van, who is from Roseau River First Nation, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital. A 46-year-old passenger in the van, also from Roseau River, andthe 49-year-old man driving the semi-trailer truckwere uninjured.

Everyone was wearing seatbelts.

Investigators believe the driver of the minivan was under the influence and could face impaired driving charges, Manaigre said, adding she isn't currently in custody.

It was one of five cases in the span of six hours on Friday in Manitoba where RCMP patrol officers came across or stopped drunk drivers, Manaigre said.

"People are still making these bad decisions and we're dealing with the consequences," Manaigre said. "We're very fortunate that in the end it appears to be very minor injuries and everyone was pretty much able to walk away from this."

Morris is approximately 60 kilometres south of Winnipeg.
