City, province and Kinsmen Club sign $4 million deal to renovate West End facility

The Sherbrook Pool will be renamed after the Kinsmen Club, after the service organization signed a $4 million partnership with the city and the province to renovate the beloved but aging facility.

The renovation project includes $1 million from the province, $421,000 cost-shared between the province and the city, approximately $1.7 million from the city and $1 million from the Kinsmen Club.

Children and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief, who is also the minister responsible for the City of Winnipeg, made the announcement Friday.

For decades, the Sherbrook Pool has been an important site for water fun, sports and fitness programs benefiting people of all ages, from children and youth in the Sharks Swim Club to seniors, and we will help to ensure the legacy continues, he said in a news release.

The work on the building will include structural repairs to the roof, support beams and pool tank, as well as improvements to the repairs to the drainage, heating and ventilation systems.

The 80-year-old building was closed in 2012 due to concerns it was no longer structurally safe.

Repairs are expected to take up to a year, and officials hope the pool will re-open either in late 2015 or early 2016.
