RCMP find hole in thin river ice during search for missing snowmobiler

Strong currents forced an RCMP dive team to abandon an underwater search on the Assiniboine River after a snowmobiler went missing over the weekend.

Investigators believe asnowmobilermay have crashed through the ice after he and his machine went missing over the weekend.

A 62-year-old St. Francois Xavier man was reported missing to Headingley RCMPat about 8 p.m. CT Saturday.

The manoftensnowmobiled near the Assiniboine River in St. FrancoisXavier.Investigators searched the recently-frozen river and found a hole in the ice.

An RCMP dive unit then tried to search the area but the effort was cut short due to strong river currents and safety concerns.
