A newly-elected Manitoba NDP MLA can breathe a sigh of relief, after an official recount secured his victory in the Oct. 4 provincial election.

The Elections Manitoba recount, conducted on Monday, has declared Dave Gaudreau the winner in the St. Norbert constituency.

On election night, Gaudreau wasdeclared the winnerby a margin of just 30 votes over Progressive Conservative candidate Karen Velthuys.

Any margin within 50 votes automatically triggers a recount.

Following the recount, which took place inside a Winnipeg courtroom for much of Monday, Gaudreau's margin rose to 31 votes.

Gaudreau succeeds New Democrat Marilyn Brick, who did not seek re-election.

A recount in another constituency, Kirkfield Park, is slated to take place on Wednesday.
