Man dead after several people tried to fight off knife-wielding attacker in West Broadway: police
Police have arrested 34-year-old in connection with death of man in his 50s after Friday night stabbing
A man in his 50s is dead after being stabbed during a random incident in the West Broadway area Friday night, bringing the number of homicides in Winnipeg this year to 22 the same number the city saw in all of 2018.
Winnipeg police say they responded to a report of a fight involving several males near Sherbrook Street and Sara Avenue at about 8:45 p.m.
But when they arrived, officers found a number of people trying to fend off an aggressive male with a knife, said Const. Rob Carver, a police spokesperson.
Officers found one manhad been stabbed in the upper bodyand immediately began administering first aid, according to a Saturday news release.
The victim was taken to hospital by ambulancebut died from his injuries, police said.
A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing. Charges have not yet been laid and police have not released the identitiesof either the suspect or the victim.
Carver said police don't believe the attack was related to methamphetamine use at this time.
On Friday night, a condominiumbuilding in the area was surrounded by police tape. Behind tape, medical supplies and bloody gauze were strewn across the ground.
Investigating officersare looking to speak with the driver of a white SUVwho stopped and offered to helparound the time of the incident, police said Saturday.
Carver said police think the driver could have information that might be helpful to them.

City reaches 2018's homicide number
In 2018, Winnipeg ended the year with 22 homicides.
From 2007-16, Statistics Canada says the city averaged29 homicides per year.
The city set a record in 2011 with41homicides. But by the end of May 2011, only 16 homicides had been recorded.
When a woman was killed in Winnipeg's 18th homicide of 2019, police spokesperson Const. Jay Murray said the city didn't reach that threshold last year until November.
