No inquest into ER death

The province's medical examiner has decided not to call an inquest into the death of Dorothy Madden.

The province's medical examiner has decided not to call an inquest into the death of Dorothy Madden.

Seventy-four-year-old Madden died last September after waiting almost six hours in the St. Boniface emergency department.

The circumstances of her death generated extensive media coverage and public anger.

In announcing his decision today, Dr. Thambiraja Balachandra says St. Boniface Hospital and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority have responded with initiatives to deal with waiting times and patient care. He says the province has appointed an Emergency Care Task Force to address emergency-room care in all Winnipeg hospitals.

Balachandra says the positive approach were major considerations in his decision not to call an inquest.
