Mayor hits bump trying to reduce school zone speeds

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz is back to the drawing board with his campaign to reduce speed limits in school zones.

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz is back to the drawing board with his campaign to reduce speed limits in school zones.

Itbegan last fall when he asked the province to allow the changes. Permission must be receivedbecause the rules fall under the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act.

Winnipeg is the only city in western Canada that doesn't require a lower speed around schools, Katz has noted. Hewants the 50 km/h limit dropped to 30 km/h.

The province recently responded, saying it is studying how to improve safety in school zones. It also noteda request in 1995 to drop the limits was denied, suggesting the current request will likely receive the same fate.

Katz says he will send a letter directly to the minister of transportation.
