More than 65 people banged pots and pans on the front steps of the Manitoba legislature on Wednesday night in support of the ongoing student protest in Quebec.

Those who took part in Winnipeg's "casserole rally" were protesting in solidarity with Quebec post-secondary students who have been hitting the streets every night, for more than 100 days.

The Quebec protests began initially in response to proposed tuition fee hikes, but they have since evolved to decryemergency legislationthat calls for heavy fines for students and their federations, and strict regulations governing demonstrations.

Casserole rallies or cacerolazos originated in Latin American countries as a form of popular protest where people bang pots and pans.

Sympathy demonstrations similar to the one in Winnipeg have been taking place in cities across Canada.

Organizers of the Winnipeg event say they are working on a bigger protest for Thursday evening.
