Vigil remembers homicide victim Tanya Nepinak

Dozens gathered in a downtown Winnipeg park on Thursday to remember Tanya Nepinak, who went missing a year ago and is now believed to be a homicide victim.

Dozens gather in Winnipeg to remember Tanya Nepinak, who went missing one year ago to the day and is now considered by police to be a victim of alleged serial killer Shawn Lamb.

Family members and friends held an evening vigil at Memorial Park to mark one year to the day since Nepinak went missing.

Nepinak waslast seen on Sept. 13, 2011, leaving her home on Sherbrook Street. She told her mother she was going to a pizza restaurant nearby, family members have said.

Then in June, Winnipeg police charged Shawn Lamb, 52, withthree counts of second-degree murderin connection with the deaths of Nepinak, Carolyn Sinclair, 25, and Lorna Blacksmith, 18.

Nepinak's body has never been found, but police believe she is dead. The remains of Blacksmith and Sinclair have been recovered.

Then in August, police announced that they have reason to believeNepinak's remains may be buried at the Brady Road landfill.

A search for her remains has yet to be launched. Family members and friends say they want that search to begin before winter begins.

Nepinak's son and daughter were in attendance atThursday's vigil, as were First Nation leaders like Grand Chief Derek Nepinak of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
