Quebec cyclist claims 1st Canada Summer Games gold

A Quebec cyclist has claimed the first gold medal at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Anne-Julie Tremblay of Saguenay battled intense summer heat to claim top prize in cross-country mountain biking at the Bison Butte Mountain Bike Course at FortWhyte Alive.

The 21-year-old cruised the course with a provisional result of 1:30:01, 45 seconds faster than Ontario's Jenn Jackson, 22.

Winnipegger Becca Man, 16, placed 10th overall for Team Manitoba with a time of 1:51:53.

Tremblay said she was able to pull away from Jackson on the technical climb on lap four even though Jackson "put her foot down" on the straightaways.

Tremblay led the entire race. "My mind was focused. I just take control and be concentrated and I'm happy."

Tremblay said Sunday's win puts her in a good position heading into world championships with Team Canada in September.

Felix Burke of Quebec won the men's gold with a time of 1:17:01. Brody Sanderson of Ontario took home the silver and Flix Belhumeur,also of Quebec, bronze.

Manitoba results

Team Manitoba's beach volleyball women's team comprised of identical twins Kearley and Josie Abbott defeated New Brunswick 2-0 in an afternoon matchup at the Sargent Park Beach Volleyball Centre. They take on Nova Scotia at the same venue Monday at 7 p.m. CT.

The Manitoba men's team, made up of Ben Hooker and Daniel Thiessen, was also victorious, bestingNew Brunswick 2-0. They were due to play a second Sunday match versusNewfoundland and Labrador just after 7 p.m. CT.

Team Manitoba's men's softball team was trounced by their Saskatchewan counterparts 17-1. The local men's baseball squad fared better, defeating Newfoundland and Labrador 5-2 at Whittier Park.

In women's basketball, the Manitoba women's team lost to Ontario by a score of 70-60.
