3 taken to hospital after West Broadway apartment fire

Three people were taken to hospital in unstable condition after a fire at an apartment block on Young Street, in Winnipeg's West Broadway area, Thursday afternoon.

Three people were taken to hospital in unstable condition after a fire in Winnipeg's West Broadway area Thursday afternoon.

Crews were called to the fire at a three-storey apartment building on Young Street near Balmoral Street, just north of Balmoral Hall School,around 1:34 p.m, a news release from the City of Winnipeg said.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews got severalresidentsout using aerial ladder trucks and ground ladders, the city said. All other residents were able to get out on their own.

Five people in total were assessed at the scene, three of whom were taken to hospital, the city said. No other injuries were reported.

The fire-paramedic service's major incident response vehicle also provided shelter to residents at the scene.

Theblaze was declared under control just after 2 p.m., and most of the damage was contained to the suite where the fire started, the city said.

Damage estimates aren't available yet and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
