From beavers biting testicles to rat-faced whores, the NDP's Pat Martin has established a reputation for coming up with new and unusual ways to express his frustration with his opponents.

This time, the Winnipeg Centre candidateis catching heat for calling a Green Party candidate a "son of a bitch" during a debate at Winnipeg's Portage Place Shopping Centre on Wednesday night.

Butcompared to remarks he's made in the past, that one barely registers.

Here are the top five Pat Martinismsfromthe past five years:

1. Tight underwear

In February, Martin left his seat briefly during a vote in the House of Commons. When challenged by a Conservative MP about the validity of his vote, Martin gave the following explanation for his absence:

"I can blame it on a sale that was down at the Hudson's Bay [Company] they had men's underwear on for half price. I bought a bunch that was clearly too small for me and I find it difficult to sit for any length of time I apologize if it was necessary for me to leave my seat briefly, but I did not mean to forfeit my right to vote."

Martin later explained the remark with another reference to undies and cheeks.

"Some Conservative MP got his knickers in a knot, I think, about the fact that I stepped away from my chair for a couple of seconds, and so, you know, I believe that his point of order was tongue in cheek and it warranted a cheeky response."

2. Rat-faced whores/eat my shorts

In December 2012, after the Conservative government failed to invite Martin to an announcement in his own riding, he took to Twitter with a rant for the ages.

In December 2012, Martin borrowed a line from Bart Simpson and tweeted "eat my shorts" to a Twitter user.
"I'm not 'worked up' so much as 'fed up' with the rat-faced whores in the CPC [Conservative Party of Canada] who neglect to invite me to announcements in my riding," he tweeted.

The rant included telling one Twitter user, "f--k you," and another, "eat my shorts."

He even confirmed during the tirade that his account hadn't been hacked, he was just "p---ed off."

Martin eventually apologized and deleted his Twitter account.

3. Beaver bites testicles

In October 2011, Martin let loose over trade issues in the House of Commons and called on a national symbol to construct a questionable metaphor during question period.

In October 2011, Martin called on Canadian folklore and compared the Conservatives' trade policy to a beaver that would bite off its own testicles and offer them to a "tormentor." (Ingham Nature Photography)
"Mr. Speaker, folklore has it that the Canadian beaver will bite off its own testicles when it is threatened and offer them up to its tormentors. I think that is a fitting metaphor for the way our Canadian government reacts to bullying on trade issues, by carving off pieces of our nation and offering them to the Americans," he said.

4. Dante, charlatans and fraudsters

In February 2012, Martin spoke against the Conservative government's support for the asbestos industry in Quebec.

Having worked in an asbestos mine himself, he's frequently spoken out about Canada exporting the product to other countries.

After a CBC investigation revealed manipulated data from a Canadian study into asbestos safety, Martin called on biblical inspiration in one of his more restrained speeches.

"I rise, today, to condemn the Conservatives for their boosterism and cheerleading of the asbestos cartel and the human misery it causes. Dante should have reserved a special level of hell for the charlatans and the fraudsters of the government-sponsored Asbestos Institute who knowingly and willingly conspired to hide the effects of asbestos exposure from the world," he said.

5. F--king prick and son of a bitch

On Wednesday night, Martin was invited to a debate by a Winnipeg business association. Things got heated while candidates grilled Martin about whether he currently lives in the Winnipeg Centre riding, for whichhe's been the MP since 1997.

When Green Party candidate Don Woodstock moved on to questioning Martin about how he helps people with mental-health issues who show up at his inner-city office, Martin said:

"You're insulting my staff who work diligently to help people who walk into my office on a regular basis and have done. They have a reputation second to none to providing service to people in this community. You've lived here what, four years in Winnipeg Centre? Well, maybe look into it a bit before you insult my staff."

When Martin was interrupted by Woodstock, who pointed out it was the staff and not Martin, the incumbentsaid twice, audibly, "You son of a bitch."

Later, he called Woodstock a "f--king prick," which was picked up on cameras but not by the debatemicrophones.
