Brandon's Daly Overpass closed for most of Thursday morning after train derailment

A train derailment damagedBrandon's Daly Overpass and closed down a busy street in the southwestern Manitoba city for much of Thursday morning.

Three Canadian Pacific Railwaycars left the track and at least one hit a concrete support of the DalyOverpass sometime before 1:45 a.m., Brandon police said in a news release.

The rail cars were not carrying any hazardous goods, but the overpass was visibly damaged as a result, police said.

Earlier Thursday, 18th Street (Highway 10 outside the city) on both sides of the Daly Overpass was closedas engineers investigated whether the structure's safety hadbeen compromised.

It was reopened at around 11 a.m., police said.

A new overpass is under construction and hasn't opened yet, so the traffic closure wassignificant,Brandon policeSgt. Kirby Sararastold CBCearlier Thursday morning.

"It really kind of has put a bit of curb on people's morning commute on their way to work," she said.
